One of the biggest scams in 2021 was Imposter scams. This means someone is pretending to be someone else. I am going to tell you how this Amazon scam works, so you can protect yourself from being caught off guard and your money

Business Imposter Scams

The biggest imposter scam in 2021 according to the FTC was business scams. There were 273,000 reports. 35% of those scams were scam artists impersonating Amazon.

Why Amazon?

Because Amazon is such a big company it’s common for consumers to have a package(S) being delivered from them.

How did it happen?

Supposedly a representative (scammer) from Amazon tried to call or text a consumer. In the message they told the consumer that there was a problem and they were calling to fix it so they could get a refund.

When the consumer called them back, they tricked them into getting remote access to their computer or cellphone.

The Scammer then told the consumer, they added a few extra zero’s and they had refunded too much money. With this in mind, they asked the customer to refund them the difference. In a few instances, the scammer begged for help so they wouldn’t get fired from Amazon!

To clarify, they really didn’t work for Amazon, they are a scammer.

In fact, to make their overpayment appear more believable, the scammers have even accessed the persons bank account. As a result, they moved some money from one account to another account to make the deposit “appear” real.

For this reason, when some consumers saw the large deposit in their checking account, they really though the large deposit was the refund (which was fake).

Because the transaction “appeared” real, the consumer ended up believing them and sending money to the scammer.

What should I do if I get a phone call?

As you can see, it’s a good idea to be very cautious about any text messages or phone calls who claim to be from Amazon.

In fact, it’s a good idea to review your amazon account yourself to see the transactions you made instead of responding to the phone call or text message.
